Poker Freerolls Strategy - Patience

The strategy you should implement in poker freeroll will vary from the normal strategy used in a regular poker tournament. The main reason for the change in strategy is simply that none of the players have any money invested in the freeroll. If someone goes all-in on the first hand with A5 and gets knocked out they do not care. There is a very different mindset among the players in a poker freeroll.

Patience becomes an essential "skill" to develop in a poker freeroll. Some players may find it very difficult to be patient. If you struggle with patience I would recommend turning on auto-fold for the first hour. If you are serious about winning money you should not risk your freeroll tournament life in the first hour. The odds are too great that you will eventually get knocked out even with a monster hand if 3 people are calling your all-in everytime.

I have had success not even playing a hand in the first hour. After the first hour many of the crazy players have knocked each other out. You are now able to some degree play real poker. You can implement bluffing and slow-playing strategies more effectively. I still would not reccommend slow-playing until the 3rd hour of a typical freeroll; it all depends on how the other players at your table are playing.

Patience again becomes essential late in the poker freeroll. If you want to finish in the money, you might have to fold some strong hands. Believe me, there is nothing worse than playing for three hours and finishing 100th when the top 99 places pay out. I have folded QQ numerous times as the pay out point approaches. Be sure to keep an eye on how many players are left in the tournament and know what place you need to finish in to win money.

I recently signed up for CD Poker to try out their poker software. It is decent and the ring traffic at the tables is average. The bonus takes awhile to collect (600 pts/$10), but the best deal was the $1,000 new depositors poker freeroll. My online Texas Holdem Poker Freeroll Tournament Strategy.

To get started in playing Texas Holdem poker online I would recommend first to download the software from one of the many online poker rooms. The software is free and allows you to play poker online for free or for real money. I would recommend trying out the available poker freeroll tournaments first. As the name implies freeroll tournaments are just that, free. There are many that don't require any minimum amount of hands played to qualify, and I have provided a great list of more than 350 poker freerolls that take place every week in my poker freeroll tournament section.

My basic strategy for a freeroll is simple. I start out the tournament for the first 2 or 3 round playing very "tight." this means folding almost every hand. The only hands I will play in the first 2 rounds are AA, AK, and KK. The reason for this is that there are a lot of crazy players in a poker freeroll. Since no one has any actual money invested in the tournament they have nothing to lose and play like it. By laying back and playing tight in the first 2 rounds you hopefully let a lot of the crazy poker players knock each other out, without taking much of a risk of getting drawn out, and knocked out of the tournament.

Around the beginning of the 3rd round I adjust my strategy and begin playing what I consider to be the top 9 hands in poker. They are AA, KK, QQ, AK, JJ, 1010, AQ, 99, 88. I will play the first five of these hand with a raise from any position. The last four I will raise if I'm in late position, and just call if I'm in early position. Position refers to where you are at in respect to the dealer. Early position would be the players to the left of the dealer. Late position are the players to the right of the dealer who are also the last to act. Being in late position gives you an advantage by allowing you to see what the other players have already done with their cards. Back to the strategy, I will play very aggressive with the top 9 hands. There is no use in slow playing and trying to trap anyone in a poker freeroll. You are better off playing aggressive. Someone will almost always give you action. You must be willing to go all in when playing with the top 9 hands. For example. I have JJ, and raise a couple 100 before the flop and get 3 callers. The flop comes 5,6,Q. I will then go all in on my next turn to bet. You don't want to let the players who are trying to make a straight or flush stay in for free. If they are going to outdraw you, then you want them to risk all their chips to do it.

My strategy changes once again around 6th round, usually after the 5 min. break most tournaments have after the first hour. I then begin to loosen up and play more cards, but only in late position. From late position, with no raises I will play any 2 hole cards of the same suit and connected (suited connectors) ie. 6,7 of hearts. I will play the top 9 beginning hands from any position. Hopefully by now there are not too many of the crazy players left. Now you can be more strategic about your bets, implementing trapping, bluffing, and semi-bluffing techniques. Trapping is only advisable when you have a monster hand like a full house, high flush, etc. When you trap someone you hope they will attempt to bluff you out of the pot or that they catch something decent like 2 pairs and bet big, and then you reraise all in with your monster hand. Semi-bluffing is making a bet on a draw. For instance, you have a flush draw, and only need 1 more card to make a flush. You can bet, and maybe win the pot right there if everyone folds. If people call, and you hit your flush then it worked out and the pot is now bigger because of your bet earlier. If you miss your flush on the next card, everyone might check to you because of your earlier bet. You now get to see the river (last card) for free.

Finally my online poker tournament strategy changes when it gets late in the tournament. The idea is to win money. The worst feeling is finishing 19th when only 18 place get paid out. I will go back to my first round strategy of only playing AA, KK, and AK until I am "in the money." After that I will revert back to the loose strategy and try to win it all.

Coming off my recent 2nd place finish in the Bodog $250 NL Texas Holdem freeroll on Thursday, I attempted to win another late night Bodog poker freeroll on Friday. Once again it was a battle to stay awake. I ended up getting seated at a table where I was the only one playing after 1/2 hour. Everyone else was on autofold, so of course I raised every time and stole the blinds for about an hour until my chip stack was up to 10k. At this time the other players were at around $300 chips each. I decided I wasn't ready to play against real players yet. It was still too early in the tourney, so I started folding as well just to keep the asleep players at my table, and keep an awake player from joining my table. Half an hour later the small blinds started getting too big and a player got wiped out. Of course someone with 20k in chips joined the empty seat. At this time there were about 200 players left, and my guess is about 100 of the poker freerollers were asleep and on autofold. I began to play with real players and was able to build up to 30k in chips. I began to get tired my self and decided to move into aggressive mode. I was raising almost every hand before the flop. I picked up AK in early position and raised 5k; everyone folded up to the big blind who reraised all in. I figured I was probably 50/50 if he had an under pair, or a big favorite if he was on an A_. Bodog NL Texas Holdem Poker Freerolls

Lately, my favorite place to play poker online has been Bodog. There is good action at the NL Texas Holdem cash games, and they have the $6 turbo sit n gos that I enjoy playing. They als0 feature daily freerolls that start at 1 am west coast time, so I have been staying up all night frerollin' on Bodog. The poker freerolls during the week are for a $25o prie pool paid over 18 place. I believe 18th place gets something like 2 bucks. The weekend tourneys have a $1,000 prize pool and start in the afternoon. They begin at around 6pm PT on Friday and Saturday and 2 pm PT on Sunday. After having played a few of these tournaments to no avail I finally hit paydirt Thursday night. I finished in 2nd place out of other 1,000 entrants and won a whopping $50. Not bad for 5.5 hours of online poker playing. Hey, usually I would have LOST twice that if I had played for 5 hours straight. I find that one of the secrets to winning this toournament is being able to stay awake. So, while pounding Rockstars (energy drink) to keep my edge I battled to the final table, and to a 2nd place finish ina poker tournament. When I finally realized what I had just done, I was actually a little disappointed. I started thinking, If this had just been a $5 entry fee tourney, insted of winning $50 I would have won something close to a $1,000. But, there was a feeling like I had just accomplished something. I had fought through a thousand of late night poker players. Some were probably drunk, some strung out, and most just too tired to complete what they started. Here it goes. I have decided to create my first blog. If you are reading this you are probably interested in playing poker, and if you are anything like me, you may already be spending hours playing poker online. I have been playing online for about 5 years now off and on since I turned 18. Which means I'm 23 for those who might be strung out from an all night poker session and not quite able to do the math. I just recently discovered how many places offer free entries into poker tournaments Sure the prize pools aren't big, but hey it's free, and fun right.
